When I expressed my desire to visit Fukushima, Takanobu strongly discouraged me. The consequences of the nuclear disaster are dreadful and the inhabitants have to face them every day. Fukushima became for me not only distant but also dangerous and inaccessible.

The sounds that Takanobu recorded and sent to me were not simply sounds of any given environment that I would just use in a composition; they made me have an awareness of Fukushima. For me they are sounds of a place I can only imagine, a signal sent from the unknown, for Takanobu they are his everyday sonic environment.

Similar sounds can probably be heard in almost every city of the world; traffic, birds, water, wind, people talking, construction works… Nonetheless, the first sound file I decided to work with was named “decontamination”.
